Q. One of the questions we get asked the most is ” It says on the 18XX census that my ancestor was a lighterman: How come he’s not in the Bindings Indexes?”
A. This is a very good question. Rob Cottrell and James have put their heads together to try to come up with the definitive answer to this puzzle:

1. Your ancestor was telling porky pies to the census enumerator. As the lightermen considered themselves the aristocrats of the river, it is not surprising that people ‘sexed up’ their occupation from, say, casual dock labourer.

2. The ancestor is in the Bindings Indexes, but not under the name you searched for. Names change over time, transcription errors do occur.

3. Perhaps he was a lighterman, but not on the tidal Thames. The companies remit for example, extended only as far as Teddington Lock. He might have worked on another river, the Medway for example.

4. The entry in the 18XX census is incorrect.

Q. I’m not sure that the entry you want to charge me £’s for is the entry I’m looking for? Could you give me a bit more information for free so that I can make up my mind?
A. In advance of a purchase you know already the geographic area and a date range of the transcription. You also have the option to search by surname and forenames too. That’s about half the information in the entry. If we give any more details to you for free, there’ll be nothing left you’ll want to pay for!
Our pricing policy is to make the information available at a cheaper price than is available anywhere else, (unless you can walk to the Archives!).

Q. Are you transcribing any more Registers?
A. Yes. Our aim is to transcribe as much of the Docklands area as possible.

Q. Will you be transcribing any Marriage or Burial Registers?
A. Yes. We are mainly concentrating on Baptisms first, because they are of most use to family historians, but we have started on marriages already.

Q. I’ve paid my money and haven’t got my results!
A. There are two possible explanations for this:
1. The email address you entered was incorrect.
2. The button that says “Get your detailed results” wasn’t pushed.
If this happens to you, use the email link at the top of the page, stating your search name in CAPITALS and we’ll send you your results as soon as possible.

Q. Can I link to your site?
A. Yes, provided your site is related to Docklands, family history or watermen & lightermen.

Q. I have transcribed some Registers myself, could I make them available through your site?

Q. Do you hold any records other than the ones you publish?
A. No. The only information we hold relates to the parsishes we’ve transcribed.

Q. Can I request a parish to be transcribed?
A. Yes, so long as it is in the docklands area. We welcome your suggestions.

Q. What does M.E.O.T. and M.E.N.T. mean?
A. Mile End Old Town and Mile End New Town.

Q. Why is it that in some transcriptions the entry number is blank?
A. This is because in some register books, particularly the early ones, the entries simply weren’t numbered.

Q. Are you going to transcribe St So and So??
A. If it is a baptism register, in the Docklands East End of London area, then answer is yes.

Q. Are you going to do marriages & burials?
A. We have already started on some marriages (when it is on the same microfilm as the baptisms) but we will mainly concentrate on the baptism registers.

Q. Why do I have to enter verification letters to use the parish register search page?
A. This has become necessary as the site has become the target for a denial of service attack by someone who wants to stop the site running. What is being done is that a computer has been programmed to enter a name into the search box and repeatedly press the search button. Without the verification procedure you would be unable to use the site at all. If the letters were anymore legible they would become machine readable and render the procedure redundant.

Q. I keep entering the letters but it tells me they’re wrong!
A. There are only three possibilities why this happens:
1. You have entered the letters in the forename or surname boxes.
2. You have used your browsers back button instead of using the search again link.
3. You have indeed entered the letters incorrectly.
The solution to this is not to email us saying help! We cannot enter the letters for you. We recommend you exit the site and try again, making sure you follow the instructions precisely.
