Another ten thousand odd entries. I had a few chuckles having a good look through this latest transcription that has been part of Jim's life for so long now. Once he's ploughed through the next 51 years then we'll have the whole lot from 1568 through to 1848! Why the chuckles? Well, it's the surnames, like Hurry, Late, Bird, Eggs, Quiet, Forducks and Schoolhouse. It's also interesting looking at the development in the spelling of surnames. I noticed names like Preist where they have ei not ie; Jephcott, I have a friend with the surname Jefcott; Burridg with no e on the end; Poynt and Smyth with the y instead of an i; and Apleby with the single p and not the double p as you would expect. I could go on, but I won't!

Ramblings from the Council Estate

Well, I can't believe it's the end of March already. I expect you are wondering what the highlights of the month have been for me, apart from the clock springing forward an hour. I guess, without question, it must have been my birthday. Her indoors, who is laid out on the couch snivelling away at the moment (no, I haven't upset her-it's a cold!), brought out all the stops and treated me to front row seats to Phantom of the Opera. It was slightly inconvenient, as it broke my usual routine of laying on the sofa watching any sport that happens to be on, but I got over it! Further inconvenience was to follow though, which was a meal out at the Vietnamese, but I stayed strong, and forced it all down with the help of a nice red (it was a BYO).
Oh yes, another highlight has been the re-emergance of the sports bag! Yes folks, it's come out of retirement, and I kid you not, it's been treated to three visits to the gym in the last week. Don't ask me what's brought this on, but I'm all for it, although regular use of the scales could indicate a weight issue, shall we say. It seems to have paid off already because she was extremely happy when she announced she had lost 'a couple of pounds'. After her last visit to the scales I was foolishly temped to have a go myself. The evil contraption dared to tell me that I was pushing on towards 13 stone!!!! How can I run 25 miles a week and put on a stone??? I'm afraid there's only one culprit, and it's not me, so who does that leave, yes, you guessed it, her indoors! She keeps making cakes and not eating any of them, so that just leaves me to humanely dispose of them. So, I instigated a plan of action; run further and eat less cake. So after a week of this extremely tough regime I expect you'll want to know the astonishing, miraculous results; Ok, queue the drum roll, I'm now just shy of 13 stones!!!!! So, my new plan of action, run more and give the cake away to my colleagues at school, which will be tough, watching them scoff what should be mine! By the time you read my next newsletter I'll be a week away from the Sheffield half marathon, and hopefully at least half a stone lighter!
Life on the estate has generally been quieter with the mad person upstairs much quieter since my request to turn down what she laughably deems to be music. The roadworks people have moved further down the road now, although just when we started to relax, they nipped back with their drills a week ago just as we were about to go to bed and reminded us that we can never let our guard down.

Here's your recipe for this month-yum, yum!

Chocolate Marble Cake

Ingredients

225g butter , softened
225g caster sugar
4 eggs
225g self-raising flour
3 tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp cocoa powder

Heat oven to 180C/gas 160C/gas 4. Grease a 20cm cake tin and line the bottom with a circle of greaseproof paper. Put all the ingredients (except the cocoa powder) into a food processor and whizz for 1-2 mins until smooth. If you prefer to mix by hand, beat the butter and sugar together, then add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Fold through the flour, milk and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
Divide the mixture between 2 bowls. Stir the cocoa powder into the mixture in one of the bowls. Take 2 spoons and use them to dollop the chocolate and vanilla cake mixes into the tin alternately. When all the mixture has been used up tap the bottom on your work surface to ensure that there aren't any air bubbles. Take a skewer and swirl it around the mixture in the tin a few times to create a marbled effect.
Bake the cake for 45-55 mins until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Turn out onto a cooling rack and leave to cool. Will keep for 3 days in an airtight container.
